This pre-season friendly match for the Barony Colliery Memorial Trophy donated by Midlothian’s Provost Adam Montgomery promised to be a tough test for the Athletic as the new season approaches and so it proved.
Seven times winners of the Scottish Junior Cup, Auchinleck brought a strong side to Penicuik with the opportunity to make an early impression on the watching Scotland team manager, Keith Burgess. Played in warm, sunny conditions with underfoot conditions slippery after some short sharp showers Auchinleck were soon on the attack. Penicuik’s Gibb lost his footing allowing Gordon an opening but the danger was cleared and several early Auchinleck corners were confidently dealt with by the Penicuik defence.
Penicuik’s best chance came in the 23rd minute when McDonald came close but the ball cleared the crossbar. The home side created another opening on the stroke of half time when Montgomery set up McDonald after good build up play but Evans blocked the Penicuik debutant’s effort.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 0-0 Auchinleck Talbot
The second half was an entirely different story with Auchinleck dominating the play and relaxing to produce some excellent football. Penicuik central defender, Brian Foster did not come out for the second half because of injury and Auchinleck were quick to capitalise with CASHMORE grabbing the opening goal with less than two minutes on the clock.
Fellow second half sub SEAN McILROY added a second and third before completing his hat trick from the penalty spot. Despite the introduction of home subs Ryrie and Moonie, Auchinleck continued to dominate. McILROY finished off another good move with his fourth and Auchinleck’s fifth as Penicuik’s resistance crumbled.
STUART DAVIDSON completed the scoring with a few minutes left slipping the ball past Penicuik’s trialist goalkeeper who had to step in at the last minute when regular goalkeeper Billy Bald reported in with an injury. Penicuik’s Ryan Gay who had Penicuik’s best second half effort with a strong volley had to leave the field injured just before the end of the game. After hospital treatment the Penicuik player had ten stitches inserted for a bad knee cut which will mean him missing the start of the season.
Provost Adam Montgomery assisted by Ayrshire MSP Cathy Jamieson presented the trophy to delighted Auchinleck captain Colin Spence. Auchinleck’s Liam McVeigh picked up the man of the match award but the award could have gone to any number of the visiting team who produced a terrific second half performance to entertain the large crowd.
