Kirkcaldy started on fire and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring in the 10th minute when a neat one two allowed WILSON to burst through and slot the ball past Bejaoui. They should have doubled their lead when the same player left the Penicuik defence trailing and only a great save by Bejaoui prevented the visitors going further ahead. Minutes later, a break down the right by Penicuik saw a Robertson strike go inches past the keeper’s right hand post. In the 22nd minute, with the Penicuik defence backing off, Meikle‘s shot was tipped round the post by Bejaoui for a corner kick. Ten minutes later, a header off a Kirkcaldy free kick flashed narrowly past the upright. Right on half time a first time volley by Lister was comfortably dealt with by keeper Gay.

HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 0-1 Kirkcaldy YM

It only took six minutes for Kirkcaldy to increase their lead when Blackadder set up FORBES whose first time strike hit the back of the net giving Bejaoui no chance. Kirkcaldy now had their tails up and were playing with confidence whilst Penicuik had little or no cohesion to their play. However things changed dramatically when McCULLOCH got on the score sheet in the 58th minute to give Penicuik hope for the first time in the game. Penicuik started to apply pressure, but could make no impression on a Kirkcaldy defence with Leishman and O’Neil outstanding. However, with one minute to go, a pinpoint cross into the box by Young picked out McCULLOCH who took one touch, picked his spot and curled the ball past Gay for the equaliser - much to the relief of the home crowd. Just when everyone was settling for a draw, referee McIntyre adjudged Leishman to have fouled Killin in the box and awarded Penicuik a penalty kick. McCulloch stepped up to take the spot kick, but blasted the ball high over the bar. The full time whistle was blown and Kirkcaldy players vented their ire on referee McIntyre, resulting in the sending off of Leishman. Penicuik were lucky to get a draw and had they taken all three points, Kirkcaldy would most definitely have felt hard done to.
