The opening minutes were all Penicuik but it was the visitors who created the first opportunities when a long range strike went wide of the post and minutes later a powerful Deasley strike was brilliantly saved by Easton. At the other end, a McCallum strike from twenty yards went over the bar. Then in the 17th minute, a free to Lochee was curled into the penalty box, Easton came out to gather but was left stranded as KIRK headed home. One minute later, Lochee attacked up the left and Easton was Penicuik’s saviour with another fine save. In the 24th minute, a driving run down the right by Lochee saw the ball cut back into the box and the strike on goal was cleared off the line. Penicuik equalised two minutes later when McCALLUM headed home an inch perfect Jancyzk free kick. On the half hour, following another Penicuik free kick, Lochee broke quickly from defence and Easton prevented the visitors from restoring their lead. However the visitors were not to be denied and one minute later, McCallum was dispossessed just inside his own half and Buchan drove towards goal and laid the ball off to McComiskie who cut the ball back into the box. BUCHAN following up shot for goal, but Easton blocked the shot, but could do nothing to stop him stroking the rebound into the net.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 1-2 Lochee United
In the opening minute of the half, a Penicuik corner kick caused panic in the Lochee defence, but the ball was eventually booted clear. One minute later, a great chance fell to Penicuik when a testing low cross into the box by Montgomery saw Somerville completely miss the ball. In the 52nd minute, a corner to Penicuik gave Forbes a chance, but his effort went wide of the target. Minutes later, another Penicuik corner saw Forbes strike go inches past the upright. Then disaster for Penicuik when Barr tried to head the ball back to Easton, but left it short and BUCHAN took full advantage of the error to slot the ball under the body of the keeper. One minute later, Hume did exactly the same thing but this time Buchan’s lob went high and wide of the goal – a real let off for Penicuik. In the 65th minute, Buchan dispossessed Somerville in the middle of the park, drove forward and let fly, but Easton again pulled off another great save. At the other end, substitute MacDonald had a chance, but blasted the ball high over the crossbar. In the 68th minute, a nice move up the left by Penicuik saw Montgomery’s cross beat keeper Fotheringham, but the ball came back off the bar. In the 72nd minute, a lightning break by Lochee saw Easton at full stretch to turn the ball away for a corner. Penicuik were pushing hard but were always prone to being caught out with the quick break and that’s what happened in the 80th minute but Easton pulled off the save of the match turning the ball round the post for a corner. Penicuik continued to press and in the 90th minute pulled a goal back. Substitute S Scott got past Kirk, cut the ball back into the box and McCALLUM rifled home from twelve yards. A fitting way to sign off his career in football and to earn the Penicuik sponsors Man of the Match Award.
