The opening minutes were all Bonnyrigg and they should have opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when Jamieson saw his strike saved by Bejaoui and McGachie following up was also denied by the big keeper and the danger cleared. Three minutes later, Penicuik attacked up the left with Lister, his cross picked out McCallum but his header was saved comfortably by Andrews. In the 7th minute a cross from the right saw McLaren attempt a scissor kick, but his effort went well wide of the target. Play immediately switched to the other end where Lough let fly with a powerful left foot strike that flashed inches over the crossbar. Then McGachie came close for the home side with a quick turn and shot from the edge of the box. In the 20th minute Bejaoui was at full stretch to beat away a powerful 25 yard strike. In their next attack, Turner cut across the edge of the Penicuik box but he dragged his strike inches past the far post. Bonnyrigg should have taken the lead seconds later when Thom headed a free kick back across goal, but Donaldson blasted the ball high over the bar from six yards. Bejaoui then pulled off an excellent save to deny Bonnyrigg. However, in the 26th minute, the inevitable goal arrived when McGACHIE headed home from a corner kick. Then, on the half hour, a long diagonal pass picked out JAMIESON on the left. He chested the ball down and volleyed past Bejaoui to double Bonnyrigg’s lead. Just before half time, Lister got round the back of the Rose defence but his dangerous low cross into the six yard box was cleared for a corner.

HALFTIME | Bonnyrigg Rose 2-0 Penicuik Athletic

Penicuik started brightly in the second half, but a defensive error cost them dear. A long clearance picked out McLaren inside the Penicuik penalty box and he had an inordinate amount of time to control the ball and send over a cross for JAMIESON to head home his second and Bonnyrigg’s third. The home side continued to dominate play and possession without really creating the same opportunities as they did in the first half and the second half became a bit of a non event. The only incident resembling a possible goal came in the 85th minute when a deflected strike had Bejaoui back peddling, but the ball went narrowly past for a corner kick.
