It was third v fourth at Whitton Park on a bright but blustery day autumn day in Broughty Ferry as an unchanged Penicuik side looked to leapfrog the hosts in the league table. After a minutes silence for the Dundee boxer Mike Towell who passed away on Friday Penicuik kicked off and both sides had half chances early on with Bald being aware of the danger in the 4th minute as Cavanagh posed a threat and at the other end Barr failed to get a shot away after a neat interchange of passes at the edge of the box. With ten minutes gone McLellan picked up from Blair’s pass in the visitors box but shot high over the bar and two minutes later it was ex-junior international keeper Ross who kept Penicuik at bay with an excellent save from Lough‘s volley. Both sides were playing open attacking football and play swung from end to end but clear chances were few and far between with good defensive work evident at both ends. With 20 minutes on the clock Lough blazed over followed by a riposte from the home side as a surging run by Clark into the visitor’s box was cleared for a corner which was headed over by Smart. Five minutes later an interchange between ex-Tayport pair Cavanagh and Adam saw Bald dive at Adams feet to save. At the other end Sproule saw his effort from 25 yards deflected for a corner which came to no danger and was punched clear by Ross. Just past the half hour saw Ross again collect a Penicuik corner before Blair surged up the park but saw his cross cleared for a corner which was easily collected by Bald. With two minutes to half time McCord fired high and wide from 18 yards and referee Leslie brought a goal-less half to a close.

HALFTIME | Broughty Athletic 0-0 Penicuik Athletic

Penicuik had the first opportunity of the second half as Lough and McCallum set up Sproule but he shot over and the home side responded as Clark’s shot from 16 yards was saved by Bald. Broughty forced a couple of corners in quick succession, and with 52 minutes gone as referee Leslie awarded a goal kick, he took the advice of his assistant to give a corner much to the dismay of the visitors as Smart’s shot deflected behind off a prone Cavanagh on the deck. McCord’s corner found WINTER unmarked on the edge of the box and he rifle a half volley past Bald to give the home side the lead. Penicuik responded and McCallum headed over, but Broughty attempted to turn the screw at the other end and strong defending by the visitors saw two shots in quick succession blocked. On the hour mark it was Ross who denied Young an equaliser with an excellent save and again three minutes later he denied McCallum and from the rebound Lough was unable to get a clear shot at goal and the danger was cleared. Penicuik were searching for an equaliser but the home side were equally sharp on the break and as McCallum and Somerville set up Sproule he failed to trouble Ross. Midway through the half McCallum forced a save from Ross but the home side responded as Cavanagh set up Adam whose effort was blocked for a corner. Penicuik were still creating chances as they sought an equaliser and with twelve minutes remaining Kyle Scott fired into keeper Ross’s arms. The game swung into a remarkable six minutes of injury time but the visitors were unable create a further scoring opportunity as Broughty held out for the three points.
