In the opening minutes it was Hill of Beath who applied the pressure and Penicuik struggled to clear the ball from defence when a free kick caused real problems for the home side, but eventually the danger was cleared. However Penicuik soon got over the initial pressure and in the 7th minute a great run and first time cross into the box by Sproule saw SOMERVILLE nip in ahead of Wilson to slot home from close range. Two minutes later, a driving run by Barr saw him take the return pass from Montgomery, but his strike flew over the bar. In the 18th minute, Wilson had a free header off a corner kick, but his effort went narrowly wide. Penicuik should have doubled their lead in the 28th minute, but Montgomery’s shot was beaten away by keeper Adamson. One minute later, the Haws were down to ten men when Grierson received a second yellow card. With McCrindle working hard in midfield for the visitors, in the 34th minute his 40 yard strike was tipped over the bar by keeper Bald. Just before half time, a fine run and strike by Barr had keeper Adamson watching anxiously as the ball flashed past the base of the upright.

HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 1-0 Hill of Beath Hawthorn

It only took three minutes for Penicuik to increase their lead when a strike by Lough was blocked by Conners, but the ever alert SOMERVILLE latched on to the loose ball, rounded the keeper and scored from a very tight angle. Two minutes later, Penicuik scored again when YOUNG rose above the Haws defence to power home a header off a Sproule free kick. In the 57th minute Sproule was again in action, dispossessing Conners to cut the back to Lough, but his shot went wide of the target. On the hour mark, another long range effort by McCrindle was turned away by Bald for a corner. From the corner, Penicuik broke quickly from defence and Adamson had to be alert to save a Barr shot from 25 yards. Then in the 65th minute, a defence splitting pass set up Montgomery but again Adamson denied the home side with a fine block. The icing on the cake arrived in ten minutes later when, following a corner kick, the ball was partially cleared to the edge of the box where SPROULE smashed a right foot strike into the top corner of the net with keeper Adamson rooted to the spot.
