Penicuik opened the scoring in the 4th minute when a superb Yancyzk pass set Montgomery free on the left and his first time cross was blasted home by LOUGH. In the 11th minute a cross by Lough was just missed by Somerville and keeper Wallace gathered. One minute later Montgomery set up SOMERVILLE who slotted past Wallace to double Penicuik’s lead. At the other end a Broxburn free kick sailed over the bar. Then, a powerful header by Young off a corner kick brought out a top drawer save by Wallace. Broxburn broke quickly from defence and only excellent defending by Noble saved the day for Penicuik. Immediately afterwards, Anderson had an excellent chance for the visitors, but Bejaoui denied the winger with a great save. Then McCallum had a chance for Penicuik but he blasted his shot high and wide of the target. On the half hour, a Jancyzk corner kick was punched clear by Wallace, Barr fed the ball to McCallum who crossed the ball to the back post YOUNG rose above the defence to head home Penicuik’s third. In the 39th minute, Broxburn pulled one back when DONNELLY volleyed home at the second attempt after Bejaoui had blocked his first strike. However, Penicuik restored their three goal lead when Sproule ran forty yards to outpace the defence and his inch perfect cross into the box left SOMERVILLE a simple tap in to make it 4-1. Broxburn should have scored seconds later, but a last gasp tackle by Noble again saved the home side.

HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 4-1 Broxburn Athletic

Two minutes into the second half and Broxburn broke from defence and ANDERSON got past the Penicuik defence to slot the ball past Bejaoui to reduce the deficit. At the other end, keeper Wallace was at full stretch to tip a Montgomery strike round the post. Once again Penicuik retaliated with a swift goal when HUME, unmarked in the box, headed home a corner kick. In the 59th minute, Bejaoui had to rush from goal to dive at the feet of Miller and smother the ball. Two minutes later, Somerville blasted the ball high over the bar when set up by Sproule. Shortly afterwards, substitute Connolly also blasted high over the bar. In their next attack, Somerville’s diving header went narrowly past the post. In the 70th minute, Broxburn completed the scoring when, following a free kick on the left, the ball fell to substitute RICHARDS who volleyed home from close range. Two minutes later, Sproule was denied by keeper Wallace who blocked the winger’s strike. Then Bejaoui was called into action to get finger tips to a Locke strike before the danger was cleared. The visitors had one final chance, but the strike flew high over the bar.
