A little bit of football history took place on Saturday when Penicuik Athletic competed in the Scottish Cup this afternoon for the first time in over 80 years. The home team Easthouses Lily M.W.F.C. were playing the very first Scottish Cup tie in their existence. Even the weather shone on the tie and the fans were treated to a superb footballing display by Penicuik.

In the opening minute, a Stevenson free kick was turned away for a corner by keeper Hay and from the corner a Baptie strike flew just wide of the target. In the 7th minute, midfield driving force, Stevenson, played a lovely ball over the home defence and Stewart was inches away from heading home. Five minutes later, a McLean header off a free kick was comfortably saved by Watt. In the 20th minute, a training ground corner kick saw Penicuik take the lead. Baptie curled a corner kick to the front post from where SOMERVILLE glanced home a header from a tight angle. Then a great diagonal pass by Caddow picked out Somerville. He hooked the ball as it dropped but was frustrated to see his effort go inches wide of the upright. On the half hour a long range strike by Stevenson brought the best out of keeper Hay as he turned the shot away for a corner. Then Tansey battled to win the ball in midfield, drove forward and crossed the ball to the back post where STEWART rose above the defence to bullet home a header. Three minutes later, Stewart became provider when he set up JONES who turned two defenders to cleverly slot home.

Two minutes into the half, and a defence splitting pass by Tansey set up Stewart who beat his marker, but his shot flew over the crossbar. At the other end, a free kick was scrambled away by the Cuikie defence for a corner kick. From the corner, Graeme YOUNG nipped in to head home and pull a goal back for the home side. However, Easthouses’s joy was short lived. Following a throw in to Penicuik, Tansey cut the ball back to the feet of STEWART who rifled the ball into the roof of the net. In the 59th minute, Penicuik saw a strike by Stevenson come back off the crossbar, the rebound saved by keeper Hay and a third effort deflected away by Kidd who was lying injured on the goal line. In the 65th minute another excellent Caddow diagonal pass picked out substitute Viola who drove the ball across the six yard box where Bslotted home for his hat trick. Three minutes later, VIOLA broke into the box and saw his shot came back off the upright, but he reacted quickly to slam home the rebound. Substitute Viola was causing the home defence problems with his pace and came close twice before the final whistle was blown.
