Penicuik crushed Sunnybank in this 2nd round Scottish Junior Cup tie. However the game should have been over in the first ten minutes when Penicuik created seven gilt edge chances to score, but slack finishing and great goalkeeping kept the score level until the 15th minute when HARRIS coolly slotted home from the corner of the box. Two minutes later, a shot by Knight went just wide of the keeper's left hand post. In the 23rd minute, Sunnybank earned a corner kick that was headed clear to the edge of the box, but the strike on goal was deflected away for a second corner kick that was comfortably defended by Penicuik. Three minutes later, a defence splitting pass by Knight inside the full back picked out KILLIN who took full advantage and curled the ball past Clark to double Penicuik's lead. In their next attack, another great ball by Knight was just missed by McCallum. On the half hour, Penicuik had the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was ruled offside. In the 33rd minute, KILLIN slotted home a pinpoint Ross pass for his second and Penicuik's third goal. Minutes later, Killin almost completed his hat trick with a glancing header that went just wide of the target. Then a superb pass by Lister set up McCALLUM who made no mistake, striking the ball past Clark into the bottom corner of the net. Just before half time, Penicuik were awarded a soft penalty that was competently despatched by McCALLUM.
HALFTIME | Penicuik Athletic 5-0 Sunnybank
In the 56th minute, Cunnison breaking down the right, beat the offside trap and his cross into the box was thumped home by McCALLUM for his hat trick. Two minutes later, a driving run by Kerr saw him lay the ball off to McCallum. He then set up BARR to slot home past a helpless Clark. In the 65th minute, McCallum was set free against Clark but his well struck shot flew wide of the goal. Shortly afterwards, an excellent pass by Lister set up Harris, but again keeper Clark came to the rescue for Sunnybank only for his defender to pass the ball back to him and an indirect free kick was awarded just outside the six yard box. Kerr took the free kick passing it McCallum who stopped the ball and BARR stepped in to curl the ball past the defence into the top corner of the net. Minutes later, Rennie for Sunnybank compounded his team's woes receiving a second yellow card and an early bath. In the 88th minute, PATTERSON rounded keeper Clark, but was pulled down and he stepped up to convert the spot kick sending Clark the wrong way. Clark again came to the rescue for the visitors in the dying seconds of the game, pulling off a great save to deny Killin. Despite losing nine goals, keeper Clark was outstanding throughout the ninety minutes and kept the score line in single figures.
